Solid
An object that has a fixed shape and size is called a solid. A solid occupies a fixed amount of space. Solids occur in different shapes.
These shapes are known as three-dimensional shapes.
Cuboid
Solids such as a matchbox, a book, a brick, a wooden box etc.
are all in the shape of a cuboid? A cuboid has length, breadth and height.
A cuboid has 6 rectangular surfaces, called its faces. The opposite faces of a cuboid are identical. Two adjacent faces of a cuboid meet in a line segment called edge of the cuboid. A cuboid has 12 edges. It has 8 vertices.
Cube
A cuboid having all edges of same length is called a cube. Dice,
ice cubes, sugar cubes etc. are all examples of a cube.
A cube has 12 edges, 8 vertices and 6 faces. Each face of a cube is a square.
Cylinder
A cylinder has 3 faces, 2 plane faces and 1 curved face.
It has 2 edges and no vertex. The base and the top of a cylinder are identical.
A test tube, a gas cylinder, a circular pipe, a measuring jar etc. are all examples of a cylinder.
Sphere
A sphere has 1 curved face. It has no vertex and no edge.
Football and cricket ball are examples of a sphere.
