Food Varity & Habits

There are different food habits of people from different states of India. Even in the same state or place, families have different food habits. And also the members within families have different choices of food. However, there is one common factor—we all eat cereals like wheat, rice, millet etc., along with pulses, meat, vegetables dairy products and fruits. We also find that the ingredients used are more or less the same.

Ingredients

The food we eat consists of so much variety. What are these food items made of? Certain ingredients are needed to prepare a particular dish. Oil, salt, water, spices, etc. are among these ingredients.

Cereals:The major part of our diet consists of cereals. Rice, wheat, bajara, maize and barley are the main cereals.
Pulses:Plants give us a variety of pulses. They are very nutritious. Pulses are also ground to prepare various food items. Pea, gram, moong, arahar and rajma are the main pulses.
Vegetables:We eat many vegetables. They form an important part of our diet. Potato, tomato, onion, cabbage, brinjal, cauliflower, etc. are some of the vegetables.

Spices:Plants provide us many spices, such as cloves, turmeric, ginger, garlic, black pepper, coriander etc. They add flavour to our food and also have medicinal properties.
Oil:Different kinds of oil useful in cooking are also obtained from plants. Groundnut, coconut, mustard, castor etc. are some of the oil crops.

Edible or Eatable parts

The parts of plants which can be used as a source of food are called edible parts of plants. Some plants have two or more edible parts. Leaves of mustered plant is used as vegetable whereas seeds give us oil for cooking and other uses.

Sprouted Seed

The first stage of the process from seed to plant is known as sprout. When a seed gets a favourable conditions, a small white structure has grown out of the seed. Now the seed is call sprouted.

Nectar

Bees feed on sweet juices from flowers which is called Nectar. They convert nectar into honey and store it in their hive. The nest of bees is called beehives. The rearing of honey bees in large scale is known as apiculture. Most of the year flowers and their nectar remains available in different parts of a region. Bees store this nectar for their young ones and use through the year as food. We can collect honey from such a beehive.

Herbivorous

Animals that eat only green plants are called herbivores. Example: Cow, sheep, deer, zebra, giraffe etc.

Carnivores

Animals that eat only the flesh of other animals are called carnivores. Example: Lion, tiger etc.

Omnivores

Animals that eat both plants and animals are called omnivores. Examples: Man, crow, bear etc.

Decomposers

These are organisms that decompose the dead bodies of animals and plants. Thus they derive their food from dead and decaying animals.
