### Introduction to Surface areas and Volumes

We are surrounded by solid figures wherever we can see. Most of these figures are 3-dimensional figures containing three faces that we can touch and feel. So far, you have studied, drawn, and calculated 2-dimensional figures only.

These figures you have already drawn and understood in the previous chapters from NCERT solutions for Maths class 9. These includes rectangles, squares, and circles and some of the theorems along with its proofs.

However, surface area and volume have significant importance for the students. Here, most of the figures that you will study to calculate are in 3 dimension. As given in figures of class 9 Maths exercise 13.1, you will study the 3 dimension cube, cuboids.

#### Real life application of Surface Areas and Volumes

The concepts given in the chapter 13 exercise 13.1 have immense practical use in day-to-day life. For instance – you must have seen the cardboard with sweets inside it. But when you opened it you see the box corners are not full.

This might make you wonder how much actual sweets are required to cover the entire space in the box. That is one of the simplest examples of volume. This you will be able to implement in real life too.

##### Class 9 Maths Exercise 13.1 Cube and Cuboids

In 13.1 you will study the cuboid which resembles the rectangles, but in 2 dimension plain. Students will calculate the area of the cuboid by adding the total area of all its surfaces.

A cuboid is a solid shape that has length, breadth, and height. This makes dimensions the main factors that can affect the surface area of any cuboid. If you make the changes in the dimensions of a cuboid it shall change the shape of the cuboid along with its surface area.

You might want to look at examples number 1 and number 2 before attempting the exercise 13.1 questions. The reason we are suggesting you took a study the example because the 2nd example is all about the cuboid. You will be asked mainly to calculate two types of surface areas of the cube, cuboid and similar shapes: (a) Total surface area, (b) Lateral surface area, using the basic formulae.

###### The difference between Cube and cuboid

The cuboid is a solid three–dimensional thing with six different faces. The cuboid is similar to a cube. The number of vertices, faces, and edges of a cube and cuboid are all same. However, what set cube and cuboid apart is that length, breadth, and height of cuboid may vary whereas, in a cube, the length, height, and breadth of the structure remain the same.
