Construction of a Line Perpendicular to a Given Line at a Given Point Using a Set-Square and a Ruler
Let l be the given line and P be a given point on it. In order to construct a line perpendicular to l at point P, we take the following steps:
Step-1: Place the ruler so that one of its longer edges lies along the line l.
Step-2: Holding the ruler fixed, place a set-square ABC with the arm AC of its right angle A in contact with the ruler.
Step-3: Slide the set-square along the edge of the ruler until A coincides with P.
Step-4: Holding the set-square fixed in this position, we draw a line PQ along the edge AB with a sharp pencil.
Construction of a Line Perpendicular to a Given Line at a Given Point Using Ruler and Compasses
Let l be the given line and P be a given point on it. In order to construct a line perpendicular to l at point P, we follow the following steps:
Step-1: With P as centre and a convenient radius construct an arc intersecting the line l at two points A and B.
Step-2: With A and B as centres and a radius greater than PA construct two arcs cutting each other at Q.
Step-3: Join PQ and produce it in both directions to get a line perpendicular to l.
Construction of a Line Perpendicular to a Given Line and Passing Through a Given Point Not Lying on it by Using a Set-Square and a Ruler
In order to construct a line perpendicular to a given line l and passing through a given point P not lying on it, we take the following steps:
Step-1: Place either of the set-squares so that one edge AC of the right angle alies along.
Step-2: Now hold the set-square fixed and place a ruler along the edge opposite to the right angle of the set-square.
Step-3: Holding the ruler firmly, slide the set-square along the ruler until the edge AB passes through the given point P.
Step-4: Draw line PQ along the edge AB of the set-square.
Step-5: Then PQ is the required line perpendicular to the given line l, through the point P not lying on it.
