Part of Speech – Noun

A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing, or emotions. The word thing includes:
Those things that we can see, feel, taste, touch, and hear;
Those things that we can simply think of, but cannot see or touch. That is our emotions. In the following sentences, the words in bold are nouns.

    1. Swami Ramakrishna Paramhansa was a great saint.
    2. The Sun rise in the morning.
    3. Children love to play cricket.
    4. Delhi is the capital of India.
    5. Taj Mahal was not built in one day.
    6. Ganga is a sacred River.
      7. Mount Everest is the highest range in the world.
      8. Rose is called the king of flowers.

In the above sentences, the words Swami Ramakrishna paramhansa, sun, children, Delhi, Tajmahal, ganga, Mt. Everest and rose are nouns.

Pronoun

A pronoun is the word used in place of a noun.
Examples:

    1. Aman was absent yesterday because he was ill.
    2. Swati was late for school because she woke up late in the morning.
    3. Taj Mahal looks so elegant in a moon light night because it is made of white marble.
    4. Babies cry mostly when they are hungry.
    5. Ritu and I meet often because we are good friends.
    6. Raju, don’t cut your nails with blade otherwise you will cut your fingers.

In the above sentences the words he, she, it, they, we, I, you and your are pronouns.

Adjective

An Adjective is a word used to qualify a noun.
Examples:

    • 1. Rana Pratap was a great warrior.
    • 2. Riya is a beautiful girl.
    • 3. Please give me some food to eat.
    • 4. There are thirty-five students in our class.
    • 5. Sonam gave me this shirt on my birthday.

In the above sentences, the words great, beautiful, some, thirty-five and this are adjectives.

Verb

A Verb is a word that shows some action.
examples:
1. We go to school every day.
2. Ansh is playing cricket with his friends.
3. I wrote a letter to my friend yesterday.
4. Ruby and Asmi are cousins.
5. Raja Harishchandra always spoke the truth.

In the above sentences, the words go, playing, wrote, are and spoke are verbs.

Adverb

An Adverb is a word that qualifies a verb or an adjective or an adverb itself.
Examples:

    1. The tiger runs swiftly.
    2. I could spell all the words correctly in my exam.
    3. My mother is a very kind woman.
    4. He was reading quite fast.
    5. Neha sang the song quite nicely
    6. Speak gently to the tour operator.

In the above sentences, the words swiftly, correctly, very, quite, quite nicely and gently are adverbs.
Preposition

A Preposition is a word that is used before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation with the noun.
Examples:

    • 1. The aeroplane flies in the sky.
    • 2. There lived a snake under the tree.
    • 3. My brother is fond of cricket.
    • 4. Ali has great respect for his teachers.
    • 5. There was a great friendship between Krishna and Sudama.
    • 6. The father could not go against his daughter.

In the above sentences, the words in, under, of, for, between and against are prepositions.
Some of the other prepositions are in, out, at, to, by, from, off, above, below, within, behind, between, over, among, with, behind, beneath, etc.

Conjunction

A Conjunction is a word that is used to join words or sentences.
Examples:

    • 1. Two and two makes four.
    • 2. Kiran is beautiful but cruel.
    • 3. I admire Rabindranath Tagore because he wrote great poem like Geetanjali.
    • 4. Always brush your teeth after a meal.
    • 5. Though Rani is this, yet he is active.
    • 6. If you work hard, you will be successful in your life.

In the above sentences, the words and, but, because, after, yet, if are conjunctions.

Interjection

An Interjection is a word that expresses a sudden feeling.
Examples:

    1. Hurrah! we have won the match. (Joy)
    2. Alas! The old man dies of hunger. (Grief)
    3. Hush! The baby is sleeping. (Silence)
    4. Hello! How are you? (Address)
    5. What! Aditi has come back! (Surprise)

In the above sentences, the words Hurrah!, Alas!, Hush!, Hello! And What! are interjections.
