In the following sentences, Swati is the name of a girl while Jack is the name of a boy. Hence, Swati is a female and belongs to the feminine gender. Jack is a male and hence belongs to the masculine gender. These are the two main genders in English language. But baby can be a girl or a boy. So, it belongs to common gender. Table is a non-living object. It is neither a boy nor a girl. Hence table belongs to the neuter gender. Thus, there are four genders in English Language.

The noun that refers to a male is known as masculine gender. The all living males come under the category of masculine gender.

The noun that refers to a female is known as feminine gender. The all living females come under the category of feminine gender.

The noun that refers to both male and female is known as common gender. Both male and female come under this category.
Examples:
1. Manvi’s class teacher is very good.
2. We must respect our parents.
3. The doctor examined the patient.
