Class 5 is the final year of NEP 2020’s Preparatory Stage, sitting right before Middle School begins in Class 6. NCERT has replaced every Class 5 textbook too: Maths Mela (Mathematics), Our Wondrous World (EVS), Santoor (English) and Veena (Hindi) – retiring the older Math Magic, Looking Around, Marigold and Rimjhim series. One key difference from Classes 6–8: at this stage there’s no separate Science or Social Science book and no Sanskrit paper. EVS covers both scientific and social learning together in a single subject and a third language typically isn’t introduced until Middle School.

Class 5 sample papers can’t simply borrow the format used for Middle School, because both the subjects and the question style are genuinely different at this stage:

• EVS used to be split into two parts under Looking Around; Our Wondrous World now covers the same ground – science, health, geography and civics – as one single-part book.
• Santoor weaves grammar and vocabulary into each reading unit instead of giving them separate chapters, so sample-paper grammar questions are pulled from across all five units rather than one dedicated section.
• Questions lean more on picture-based, passage-based and match-the-column formats appropriate for 10–11-year-olds, rather than long-answer or case-based questions.
• Since Class 5 is the last year before subject-wise Middle School teaching begins, these papers are also a gentle first step toward the exam style students will meet in Class 6.

Note: Unlike Classes 6–8, Class 5 has no separate Science, Social Science or Sanskrit paper – these four subjects make up the complete exam set.

Class 5 English Santoor is organised into five themed units, each pairing a story with a poem. The five sample papers cover only two units means first four chapters:

Class 5 Hindi Veena is the new entry point to NCERT’s Hindi series, ahead of Malhar in Class 6. Sample papers draw on chapters including:

• किरन (कविता)
• चाँद का कुरता (कविता)
• साङकेत (गद्य)
• न्याय की कुर्सी (गद्य)
• चतुर चित्रकार (गद्य)
• सुंदरिया (गद्य)

– among the book’s 12 chapters in total, covering अपठित गद्यांश/पद्यांश, व्याकरण, लेखन कौशल and पाठ्यपुस्तक-आधारित प्रश्न.

Based on the current papers, each subject follows a consistent, exam-realistic structure:

Maths Mela papers follow the same 50-mark, 2-hour format, built around numerical problems, reasoning and application-based questions rather than the reading/writing split used for languages.

1. Start with one section at a time rather than the full 2-hour paper – Class 5 students are still building focus and stamina.
2. Read questions aloud together at first, especially for EVS and Hindi, until the child is comfortable working independently.
3. Correct the paper the same day, explaining why an answer was wrong rather than just marking it incorrect.
4. Loop back to the relevant Maths Mela / Our Wondrous World chapter for anything that trips the child up more than once.
5. Re-attempt the same paper after a week or two to see whether the concept has genuinely stuck.
6. Keep a simple score log across all five papers per subject so progress is visible to both child and parent.

• Introduces the 50-mark, sectioned exam format in a low-pressure setting before Class 6 raises the stakes.

• Keep sessions short like 30–40 minutes per section works better for this age group than a full 2-hour sitting in one go.
• Read the EVS picture-based questions together first; interpreting an image is often the harder part, not the answer itself.
• Encourage the child to attempt the paper independently first, then review mistakes together rather than correcting mid-attempt.
• For Hindi and English writing sections, let the child write freely first, then help polish spelling and structure afterward rather than dictating the answer.
