Class 8 English Unit 2 Chapter 1 narrates the bravery of Major Somnath Sharma, the first Param Vir Chakra awardee. In October 1947, Pakistan launched an invasion in Kashmir through tribal raiders. On 3rd November, a company of only 90 soldiers from the 4 Kumaon Battalion, led by Major Sharma, faced nearly 500 enemy troops at Badgam near Srinagar. Though already injured in his arm, Major Sharma inspired his men to hold their ground. He requested air support, guided the aircraft and continued fighting fearlessly. Surrounded and outnumbered, he refused to retreat, saying, тАЬI shall not withdraw an inchтАЭ. He was martyred in the battle, but his courage delayed the enemy and saved Srinagar. His supreme sacrifice and leadership remain an inspiration of duty, valour and patriotism.
