A political controversy has erupted after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) released the class 10, 12 exam date sheets for class 1 exam, Chief Minister of PUNJAB Charanjit Singh citing the board’s decision to keep Punjabi out of the main subjects, has opposed strictly.

Describing the board’s decision as against the “federal spirit of the Constitution”, Singh ji said that he strongly opposes the authoritarian decision of CBSE to keep Punjabi out of core subjects. This is a violation of the right of Punjabi youth to learn their native language. I condemn this partisan boycott of Punjabi.

CBSE Categorized Subjects As Minor & Major:
In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, CBSE announced a special assessment scheme in July and divided the academic session into two phases. For Term 1 and Term 2 exams, CBSE categorized subjects as Minor and Major – and released separate date sheets for each category.

PUNJABI Subject for Dispute:
The central board is offering 114 subjects in class 12 and 75 in class 10. Of these, there are 19 major subjects in class 12 and nine in class 10. The “MAJOR SUBJECTS” for class 10 include social science, science, Maths, Hindi, Computer Application and English.

Regional and foreign languages—such as Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Sanskrit, French, German, Tibetan, Arabic, Persian—are classified as “MINOR SUBJECTS”. Optional subjects – Food production, retailing, music, healthcare, agriculture also come under “MINOR SUBJECTS”.

    • 1) Punjab Education Minister Pargata Singha has also criticized the board’s decision, calling it a “conspiracy to take away children from their mother tongue”. He claimed that the move was gross injustice to the students of Punjab and was against the spirit of the Constitution. Further, he asked CBSE to reconsider the decision.
    • 2) Hitting back at Punjab ministers, CBSE clarified that all regional languages have been kept in the category of minor subjects for the first-time examinations for class 10 and 12.
    • 3) It is clarified that the classification of subjects has been done on purely administrative basis for the purpose of conducting the first session examination on the basis of number of candidates appearing in the subject and in any manner Does not indicate importance of subjects as major or minor – said a senior board member.
    • 4) Each subject is equally important from the academic point of view. Punjabi is one of the regional languages offered. All the regional languages have been kept in short category for the purpose of administrative convenience with regard to the logistics required for the conduct of examinations.
    • 5) Amidst all this, the students have demanded that they should have the option of appearing in the examination either online or offline this year.
    • 6) CBSE should keep term 1 board online. If classes have been conducted then there should also be online examinations. And furthermore, they are experimenting with everything in the 2025-26 class 10th and 12th batches. At least they should take the Term 1 exam online – wrote one student on Facebook and Twitter and other social platform.

7) The first-time board exams for class 10 will begin from November 30, while class 12 exams are scheduled from December 1.
8) The test will be objective type and the duration of the test will be 90 minutes.
9) In view of the winter season, the examinations will start at 11.30 am instead of 10.30 am.
10) The examination for short subjects for class 10 will be conducted from November 17 to December 7, for class 12 examination will be conducted from November 16 to December 30. The examinations of minor subjects shall be conducted by the schools through question paper, provided that by the Board.
