Ganita Prakash Part 1 – Chapter-wise Syllabus for Class 8 Maths

Chapter 1. A Square and A Cube

Opening with the puzzle of Queen Ratnamanjuri’s 100 lockers, class 8 Ganita Prakash chapter 1 builds the concept of perfect squares and cubes through pattern discovery rather than direct instruction.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Perfect square numbers and perfect cube numbers
  • Properties of square numbers — digit patterns, odd and even behaviour
  • Finding square roots using prime factorisation
  • Finding cube roots using prime factorisation
  • Relationship between a number’s digits and its root
What Students Will Learn
Students understand why square numbers always have an odd number of factors and how this insight connects to finding roots systematically.

Chapter 2. Power Play

The paper-folding thought experiment — where 46 folds would reach the Moon — launches 8th Ganita Prakash chapter 2 on exponents and makes abstract ideas instantly vivid.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Laws of exponents — multiplication, division and power of a power
  • Zero and negative exponents
  • Expressing very large and very small numbers in standard form
  • Real-life applications of powers
What Students Will Learn
Students move from understanding what an exponent means to fluently applying all laws of exponents in calculations and real-world contexts.

Chapter 3. A Story of Numbers

A historically grounded chapter tracing number systems from ancient Mesopotamia to India’s own Vedic mathematical tradition.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Properties of rational numbers — closure, commutativity, associativity, distributivity
  • Additive identity and additive inverse
  • Multiplicative identity and multiplicative inverse
  • Rational numbers on the number line
  • Finding rational numbers between two given rational numbers
What Students Will Learn
Students understand rational numbers not as isolated facts but as part of a logically structured number system — and see India’s historical contribution to that system.

Chapter 4. Understanding Quadrilaterals

A thorough geometry chapter moving from basic polygon theory into the full family of quadrilaterals.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Types of curves and polygons — convex and concave
  • Angle sum property of polygons
  • Sum of exterior angles of any polygon
  • Interior and exterior angles of regular polygons
  • Properties of trapezium, kite, parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus and square
What Students Will Learn
Students can classify any quadrilateral by its properties, calculate unknown angles and reason about geometric relationships systematically.

Chapter 5. Data Handling

An introduction to statistics and probability with a strong emphasis on reading and interpreting data, not just drawing graphs.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Frequency distribution tables
  • Bar graphs, histograms and pie charts — construction and interpretation
  • Chance and probability — experimental and theoretical
  • Random experiments, outcomes and events
What Students Will Learn
Students develop the ability to represent data visually, draw conclusions from graphs and think clearly about likelihood and uncertainty.

Chapter 6. Mensuration

One of the most calculation-intensive chapters in Part 1, covering areas, surface areas and volumes of common shapes and solids.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Area of trapezium and general quadrilateral
  • Area of rhombus and polygons
  • Lateral surface area and total surface area of cube and cuboid
  • Surface area and volume of cylinders
  • Comparing volumes of different solids
What Students Will Learn
Students can identify the correct formula for any given shape, set up multi-step calculations without error and apply mensuration to practical real-world problems.

Chapter 7. Linear Equations in One Variable

The algebraic entry point of Part 1, building from what an equation is to solving multi-step equations drawn from word problems.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Meaning of a linear equation in one variable
  • Solving equations with variables on one side and both sides
  • Equations reducible to linear form involving fractions
  • Forming and solving equations from word problems
What Students Will Learn
Students can translate a real-life situation into an algebraic equation, solve it step by step and interpret the answer back in context.

Ganita Prakash Part 2 – Chapter-wise Syllabus for Class 8 Maths

Chapter 1. Fractions in Disguise

This chapter revisits rational arithmetic through an algebraic lens. Expressions that look complicated resolve into simple forms through logical manipulation, building algebraic confidence before the heavier algebra chapters arrive.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Operations on complex rational expressions
  • Simplifying expressions involving fractions and variables
  • Building algebraic fluency through structured problem solving

Chapter 2. Comparing Quantities

Real financial mathematics — connecting classroom percentage skills to how money actually works in everyday life.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Percentage increase and decrease
  • Profit percentage and loss percentage
  • Discount, marked price and selling price
  • Simple Interest – formula and application
  • Compound Interest – formula, derivation and application
  • Compounding annually and half-yearly
What Students Will Learn
Students understand where the compound interest formula comes from, not just how to substitute values into it — a distinction that matters in both examinations and real life.

Chapter 3. Squares and Square Roots (Advanced Methods)

Building on Part 1, this chapter develops the long division method for finding square roots of larger numbers.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Long division method for finding square roots
  • Square roots of decimals
  • Estimating square roots of non-perfect squares
  • Verifying square roots
What Students Will Learn: Students can find the square root of any number accurately — including decimals and large numbers that are not obvious perfect squares.

Chapter 4. The Pythagoras Theorem

One of the most important chapters in the entire Class 8 syllabus — a theorem students will continue using through Class 10 and beyond.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Statement of the Pythagoras theorem
  • Verification through activities and examples
  • Pythagorean triplets — identifying and generating
  • Applying the theorem to find unknown sides in right-angled triangles
  • Application problems involving heights, distances and diagonal lengths
What Students Will Learn
Students understand why the theorem is true, not just that it is true and can apply it confidently to both direct and applied problems.

Chapter 5. Proportional Reasoning

The skill of recognising how two quantities relate and using that relationship to solve practical problems.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Direct proportion — definition, recognition and method
  • Inverse proportion — definition, recognition and method
  • Identifying proportion type from real-world situations
  • Problems involving time and work, speed and distance and output and resources
What Students Will Learn
Students develop the critical habit of identifying the type of proportion before setting up any equation — a step many students skip, leading to avoidable errors.

Chapter 6. Algebra Play

The most concept-rich and exam-significant chapter of Part 2, covering expressions, identities and their applications in depth.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Addition and subtraction of algebraic expressions
  • Multiplication of polynomials — monomial × polynomial, binomial × binomial
  • Standard algebraic identities:
    • (a + b)² = a² + 2ab + b²
    • (a − b)² = a² − 2ab + b²
    • (a + b)(a − b) = a² − b²
    • (x + a)(x + b) = x² + (a + b)x + ab
  • Using identities to expand and to factorise expressions
What Students Will Learn
Students understand each identity geometrically and algebraically and can apply them in both directions — to expand an expression and to recognise and factorise a given form.

Chapter 7. Factorisation

The final chapter of the 2026–27 syllabus ties together all algebraic understanding through systematic factorisation.
Key Topics Covered:

  • Factorisation by finding common factors
  • Factorisation by regrouping terms
  • Factorisation using standard identities
  • Division of algebraic expressions — monomial and polynomial divisors
  • Finding and correcting errors in algebraic calculations
What Students Will Learn
Students can factorise any standard Class 8 expression using the appropriate method and check their own work by identifying where algebraic mistakes most commonly occur.

Key Takeaway:
Three chapters from the old textbook have been removed entirely. The Pythagoras Theorem has been given its own dedicated chapter for the first time. Every remaining topic is now taught with greater emphasis on reasoning and understanding over procedure.

5 Most Important Chapters in the New Class 8 Maths Syllabus

Based on examination weightage, conceptual depth and their importance for Class 9 preparation, these five chapters deserve the most focused study time:

  1. Algebra Play (Part 2, Chapter 6) — Standard identities and their applications appear in almost every Class 8 examination and form the direct foundation for Class 9 algebra. Students who master this chapter gain a significant advantage going forward.
  2. Mensuration (Part 1, Chapter 6) — Multi-step surface area and volume problems are among the most consistently tested question types in school assessments. Accuracy across several calculation steps is the key skill here.
  3. The Pythagoras Theorem (Part 2, Chapter 4) — A landmark theorem used repeatedly across Class 9 and Class 10 in geometry, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry. A thorough understanding now pays dividends for years ahead.
  4. Comparing Quantities (Part 2, Chapter 2) — Compound interest, discount, and profit and loss problems appear frequently in both school examinations and competitive assessments. The derivation of the compound interest formula, not just its use, is important for higher classes.
  5. Factorisation (Part 2, Chapter 7) — This chapter brings together every algebraic skill developed across the session and feeds directly into Class 9 polynomials. Students who rush through it often struggle at the start of Class 9.

How to Study the New Class 8 Maths Syllabus Effectively

Following a structured approach for each chapter produces far better results than reading through exercises passively. Here are the six steps that work best for the Ganita Prakash curriculum specifically:

  • Step 1: Read the full chapter in the textbook, including all stories, puzzles and in-text activities, before attempting any exercises.
  • Step 2: Work through the solved examples independently. Cover the given solution and attempt the example yourself before comparing your working with the textbook’s answer.
  • Step 3: Solve NCERT exercises question by question. Attempt every problem before looking at any solution.
  • Step 4: When stuck or when your answer is wrong, use step-by-step solutions to identify exactly where your reasoning broke down — then reattempt the question without looking.
  • Step 5: After completing all exercises, revisit the key topics list for the chapter and test yourself on whether you can recall and apply each main idea without reference to your notes.
  • Step 6: At the end of each month, do a brief revision of all completed chapters — not by redoing every exercise but by checking whether the core concepts and formulas are still clear.

Why Students Across India Rely on Tiwari Academy for Class 8 Maths

When a student encounters a difficult problem in Ganita Prakash, the quality of the resource they turn to makes a real difference. A solution that simply states the answer teaches nothing. A solution that shows every step, explains the reasoning behind each step and connects the working back to the concept being tested — that is what actually builds understanding.

Tiwari Academy’s Class 8 Maths content is built on exactly that principle. Solutions are written for students, not just for teachers. Every step is visible, every method is explained and every answer is aligned with the latest NCERT guidelines for 2026–27. Both English medium and Hindi medium students are fully served, making it one of the very few resources that works equally well for CBSE schools across all states.

Students can access all chapter-wise solutions, MCQs, and PDF downloads for the complete Ganita Prakash syllabus on the Class 8 Maths Solutions page at Tiwari Academy.

Yes. NCERT has prescribed Ganita Prakash Part 1 and Part 2 as the official Class 8 Mathematics textbooks for all CBSE-affiliated schools for session 2026–27. All students under the CBSE board must follow this updated curriculum.

How many chapters are in the new Class 8 Maths syllabus?

There are 14 chapters in total — 7 in Ganita Prakash Part 1 and 7 in Ganita Prakash Part 2. They cover number systems, geometry, mensuration, algebra, data handling and proportional reasoning.

What new chapters have been added in Ganita Prakash that were not in the old textbook?

The most significant addition is a dedicated chapter on the Pythagoras Theorem in Part 2. Power Play (on exponents) and A Story of Numbers (on rational numbers in historical context) are also entirely new in framing and approach compared to their counterparts in the old book.

Which chapters have been removed from the old Class 8 Maths textbook?

Three chapters from the old textbook do not appear in the new Ganita Prakash syllabus — Visualising Solid Shapes, Introduction to Graphs and Playing with Numbers.

Which is the most difficult chapter in Class 8 Maths Ganita Prakash?

Algebra Play (Chapter 6, Part 2) is consistently the chapter students find most challenging, followed by Mensuration (Chapter 6, Part 1) and Factorisation (Chapter 7, Part 2).

Is the old NCERT Class 8 Maths textbook still useful in 2026–27?

The old textbook is no longer the prescribed book for this session. However, it remains a useful source of additional practice problems for topics that appear in both the old and new syllabi — particularly rational numbers, algebraic expressions and mensuration.

Start the Session Strong – Your Next Step

The Ganita Prakash syllabus gives Class 8 students a genuine opportunity to experience mathematics as a thinking subject – one with history, cultural roots and real-world relevance. Students who engage with the textbook’s stories and activities, not just the exercises, will find the new curriculum more interesting, more memorable and ultimately more rewarding than the old approach.

Understanding the syllabus before the session begins is the first step. The second step is having a reliable resource for when exercises get difficult — one that shows the full working, explains the reasoning, and keeps pace with the CBSE 2026–27 curriculum.
