The admission brochure of IIT admissions – Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced) – has been released on the official website, jeeadv.ac.in. Usually, the exam and application form dates are released along with the brochure, however, this year, the examination dates have not been announced yet. JEE Advanced was scheduled to be conducted on July 3 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 situation. However, not disclosing the exam date is not the only change for IIT aspirants this year.
For the first time, along with the JEE Main 2021 qualified candidates, who were eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2020 but were absent in the exam, will also be given a chance to appear for IIT admissions.
These students had cleared JEE Main 2020 and were eligible for JEE Advanced 2021, so they need not clear JEE Main again this year. Usually, a student has to appear for Mains again and their attempt does not progress.
Many students who did not appear for JEE Advanced 2020 had offered relaxation after demanding extra effort. The students had claimed that they could not appear for the IIT entrance exam due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
However, appearing in the examination of these students will not increase the competition for the current students as according to the official brochure these students will be considered as “extra” apart from the current batch and will not be part of them.
Students will get their passport size photograph and signature auto-populated while filling the JEE Advanced form. These details will be taken directly from their previous year form. In addition, eligible candidates will be provided with a Unique Reference Code (URC), which will be required at the time of entering the examination hall and filling the form.
Unlike last year when the women quota was 20 per cent, this year the number of seats reserved for women will be decided by each IIT individually. The seats offered under the women’s quota are supernumerary in nature, which means these seats have been created in addition to the existing seats.
The quota for the 2021 batch will be fixed to ensure that women’s enrolment in each of the IITs is at least 20 per cent in undergraduate programmes. This means, an IIT where more females are there will create lesser of these extra seats dedicated to girls while those in which lesser female students are enrolled based on the common rank list will create more seats in comparison to others.
The seats reserved for women in IITs stood at 17 per cent in 2019 and 14 per cent in 2018. These seats are offered to ensure gender diversity in IITs, which generally have more men than women at the undergraduate level. Till now there is not a single woman who has topped the IIT entrance exam. Things are slowly changing for women. For example, Kavya Chopra from Delhi has become the first female student to score full marks in JEE Main 2021.
Apart from these, there is a 15 percent reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 7.5 percent for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates in each course. Persons with Disabilities (PwD) also get 5 percent seats reserved in IITs. Institutions also have EWS quota and foreign quota – these are supernumerary like women quota.
To be eligible for admission in IITs, students only need to qualify class 12 exam. Earlier there was a requirement to score at least 75 per cent in class 12 which has now been done away with. However, students still have to clear the exam. This rule was passed by the Ministry of Education last year, however, this year will also be applicable for students.
Through JEE Advanced, IITs offer admission to undergraduate courses leading to bachelor’s, integrated master’s or bachelor-master’s dual degree in engineering, science or architecture. Students who are in the top 2.5 lakh ranks of JEE Main are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced. With the release of the brochure, it is expected that the revised dates for JEE Main will also be announced soon. According to sources, the pending exams of JEE Main will be held in July and August, so JEE Advanced cannot be expected to be conducted before September.
In 2020, IIT Delhi was the conducting institute of JEE Advanced, this year it is the responsibility of IIT-Kharagpur. In which a total of 1,60,838 candidates registered for JEE Advanced 2020. Around 43,204 candidates qualified JEE Advanced 2020.
