The National Testing Agency has released a revised notification for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2021, which includes 27 percent OBC and 10 percent EWS reservation in all medical seats in the central pool. While central institutions like PGIMER, JIPMER and AIIMS already had OBC reservation, state medical colleges did not have all India quota seats.
It has been decided by the Government of India to implement 27% OBC reservation (Non-Creamy Layer) and 10% EWS reservation in 15% Undergraduate (UG) All India Quota seats (BDS or MBBS). This reservation will be effective from the Current Academic Session (ACS), 2025-26.
There Will Be Reservation In AIQ Seats:
All India quota (Fifteen per cent) seats and State quota (Eighty-Five per cent) seats are divided as UG medical seats in state-run institutes in India.
All medical seats in central universities – Jamia, Hamdard, etc. and all seats in some central medical colleges – AIIMS, AMU, BHU, JIPMER, etc – come under all-India quota and in state medical colleges, seats are divided in a 15:85 ratio as (AIQ and the State Quota).
State has its own Reservation Policy:
For conducting & counselling for the AIQ seats and respective state counselling bodies by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the AYUSH counselling committee do it for their seats. Each state has their own reservation policy for 85% seats.
However, OBC reservation was not implemented in 15 per cent seats contributed by state medical colleges for All India Quota and EWS reservation was introduced only in 2019. This led to protests from the OBC community and several court cases in Tamil Nadu.
Though not mentioned in the Centre’s statement, the HC of Madras had ordered the Centre to implement the OBC quota and even threatened contempt action if it was not included in the NTA bulletin.
On 29th July our Prime Minister Narendra Damodarr Das Modi announced that quota is being implemented.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has taken a historic and landmark decision to provide –
1) 27% reservation for OBC and
2) 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Section (EWS)
In All India Quota (AIQ) Scheme for Undergraduate and Post Graduate Medical/Dental Courses (Diploma/BDS/MBBS/MD/MS/MDS) from the current academic year 2025-26 – on 29th July.
The Centre has now increased the OBC and EWS reservations to 15 per cent in all India quota seats in state-run medical and dental colleges, a move that the health ministry says is that more than 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate medical practitioners from these two categories each year. Candidates will be benefited.
