Visva-Bharati students protesting for the reopening of hostels got into a scuffle with the security staff of the university on Wednesday when they tried to enter the central office by breaching the boundary wall. SFI leader Somnath said that the students have been agitating for a week demanding the reopening of the hostels, but the vice-chancellor is not responding.
He said that since the security staff of the university did not allow the students to enter the central office, a section of them tried to break the boundary wall. Many of us were manhandled by the security staff, which led to a scuffle. We were thrashed by the security guards for making reasonable demands, – he said.
We are requesting the Vice Chancellor to talk to us but he is not responding. Many students who are not locals are finding it difficult to fund their stay in hotels as offline classes have resumed, So said.
He said students would continue to protest until the university reopens hostels that have been closed since the start of the pandemic. A university spokesperson said the agitating students created trouble and went after the security staff, who were doing their work as people in groups, they are not allowed to enter the central office. He said that no decision has been taken on reopening the hostels.
Refusing to bow to students’ demand to conduct online exams, Gurugram University on Wednesday decided to go ahead with offline exams in the “BEST INTEREST OF STUDENTS”.
The decision was taken in a special meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor D Kumar. All the Deans, Heads of Departments and Principles of affiliated colleges participated in the meeting.
High drama broke out near Gurugram University on Tuesday as police used mild force to disperse students protesting against offline examinations. They blocked the main road in front of the university in Sector 51, while some took to social media to vent their anger against the government and the university.
In a message sent to the students, the Vice Chancellor said that the question is not about the examination but the importance of getting the degree. It is related to the future and life of thousands of students. So, we have taken this decision keeping in mind the future of all the students.
Based on the suggestions of all in the meeting advertisement, keeping in view the quality of education in the interest of the students, it has been decided that the examinations will be conducted as per the guidelines given earlier by the University.
