Basic Concepts of Line

Let “L” be any straight line in a plane or three-dimensional space. This line can use two directions. A line in one of these fixed directions is called a directed line. If we limit the line L to the line segment AB, a magnitude is determined on the line L along one of the two directions, so that we get the directed line segment. Therefore, a directed line segment has both magnitude and direction.

Important Terms related to Vector

A quantity that has both magnitude and direction is called a vector. The point A from where the vector starts is called its starting point, and the point B where it ends is called its terminal point. The distance between the initial and terminal points of the vector is called the magnitude (or length) of the vector, which is represented as AB or | A |, or a. The arrow indicates the direction of the vector.

What is a Position Vector?

From class XI mathematics, remember the right-hand three-dimensional rectangular coordinate system. Consider a point P in space, which has coordinates (x, y, z) with respect to the origin O (0, 0, 0). So the position of the point P with respect to its initial and terminal point, O, is the vector which contains O and P respectively.
