In a humanitarian gesture, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday granted Rs 15,000 to a poor Dalit student who cracked the joint entrance exam after he was unable to deposit the amount for seat allotment in IITs (BHU) had contacted him (JEE) Advance.
It asked the student to report at BHU within three days with necessary documents for admission. A bench of Justice DK Singh passed the order on a petition personally filed by student S. Ranjan. He requested the bench to direct the Joint Seat Allotment Authority and IIT (BHU) to give him some more time to deposit the fee, which is an amount of Rs 15,000.
The bench directed BHU to create an additional seat:
It further directed the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and IIT (BHU) to admit the student to Mathematics and Computing courses (Bachelor and Master of Technology, dual degree courses). The bench also directed the BHU to create an additional seat for the Dalit student, in case no seat is vacant as of now.
It was argued in the petition that she comes from the Scheduled Caste category. He scored 95.6 percent in class 10 and 94 percent in class 12. Ranjan secured 92.77 percentile in JEE Mains exam and secured 2,062 ranks as a SC candidate.
Thereafter, he applied for JEE Advanced on 16 September and cleared it on 15 October securing a rank of 1,469 in the SC category. The petitioner was allotted a seat at IIT (BHU) Varanasi for Mathematics and Computing course in counseling.
However, she could not arrange the meager amount of Rs 15,000 in fees to be paid before the stipulated date, the petition said. Ms. Ranjan argued that her father was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. He was advised to undergo a transplant. And also had to undergo dialysis twice a week. Could not arrange Rs 15,000 for allotment.
The petitioner and his father have written to the Joint Seat Allotment Authority several times indicating the precarious position for extension of time for which he could not deposit the fee but did not receive the reply,- pleaded advocates S. Dubey and S. Rao. Key, who was asked by the bench to assist the petitioner, who could not even engage a lawyer to present his case properly. Noting that a bright, young Dalit girl had appeared before the High Court, seeking equity jurisdiction to be able to fulfill her dream of being admitted to an IIT, the court voluntarily paid Rs 15,000. Contributed, fee for allotment of seat, the bench said.
The amount was handed over to the petitioner after the court hours on Monday, it said. As an interim measure, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and IIT (BHU) are directed to admit the petitioner in Mathematics and Computing course. If no seat is vacant in the said subject, BHU may be asked to create an additional post. which may regularize the admission of the petitioner in case any seat becomes vacant in future as a result of exigencies arising during the admission process,- Justice Singh said. Then the petitioner shall continue his studies for the course against an additional seat, he ordered.
