CBSE Exam Paper Under Fire For Alleged Gender Stereotyping

An understanding passage in the CBSE Class 10 English question paper has sparked a controversy for allegedly promoting “GENDER STEREOTYPING” and supporting “REGRESSIVE NOTIONS”, following which the board on Sunday (12.12.2021) took the matter to subject experts.

In the Class 10 exam held on Saturday, the question paper included questions such as “Women’s emancipation destroyed parental authority over children” and “Only by accepting her husband’s way could a mother achieve obedience over a younger one”.

Are we really teaching this drivel to kids?

Various passages have gone viral on social media with users endorsing “MISOGYNISTIC” and “REGRESSIVE OPINIONS” and the hashtag “INSULT TO CBSE WOMEN” trending on microblogging site.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also took to Twitter to object to the question paper. “Unbelievable! Are we really teaching kids this drivel?”

CBSE Board will have to clarify this:

    1. Clearly the Bhartiya Janta Party Govt. supports these regressive views on women, then why would they join the CBSE syllabus? – he said.
    2. In Tamil Nadu state, Committee of Congress Spokesperson L. Ramachandran said, – This outrageously absurd reading passage appeared in the 10th board exam paper that day. What are we teaching our children? Central Board of Secondary Education – CBSE will have to explain and apologize for instigating our children for this.

The whole passage is so silly

That day the class 10 CBSE English paper says that children and servants should be taught in their place and women who gained some freedom destroyed parental authority over children. The whole route is so stupid. Who are these idiots setting up question papers in CBSE,” said another Twit user?

CBSE, issued a statement:
In a statement, the Central Board of Secondary Education said, – There has been mixed response from some parents and students on passing in one set of English paper of CBSE Class 10 1st session held yesterday. Promotes regressive views on family and alleged gender stereotypes.

Appropriate action will be taken in the interest of students

    1. With regard to the correct answer option and answer key released by the Board.
    2. The matter will be referred to the subject experts for their consideration as per the pre-determined procedures of the CBSE.
    3. It is clarified that if experts are of the view that there are multiple interpretations in the passage, appropriate action will be taken to protect the interest of the students.
