Cardinal directions are the four directions, or cardinal points, are the four main compass directions: north, east, south, and west, commonly denoted by their initials N, E, S, and W respectively. How does a compass help us to locate places?

A compass is an instrument that is used by the people who travel a lot. It helps us to locate the four directions. The needle of the compass always points towards the North. Once you knoew where is north, it is easy to locate the other directions.

What is the scale on a map?

Map Scales are used to represent the virtual size of objects and virtual distances on the map as compared to the actual size of objects and actual distances on the ground. For example, a map scale of 1 inch to 1 mile states that 1 mile on the ground is represented as 1 inch on the map.

What is the key to map?

The explanation of a symbol is called a key. A key helps to read a map correctly and easily. A map key is an inset on a map that explains the symbols, provides a scale, and usually identifies the type of map used. The key explains the symbols while the legend holds the key and other information. Map keys use symbols, colours, or lines to represent important places or landmarks on a map. They are usually located at the bottom left or right of a map.

What is a scale? How is it used on a map?

Every map has a scale as it is not possible to show the exact distance on a map, therefore a scale is used on a map. For example- If a distance of a place is 100 km , it may be represented on the map as 1cm.

How do landmarks useful?

Landmarks is a place or a thing that can be recognized easily from a distance and help us to know where we are. Example- a post office. Metro station, temple, school, church etc. A landmark is thus an object or a feature of a landscape or town that has importance or makes a place easily recognizable.

Why are boundaries important?

Boundaries are important as they help us in locating places easily. They help us to define our space, prevent the encroachment of our area and thus helps us to live peacefully. Boundaries help to make for good relations between nations. Each nation has to define who does and doesn’t belong to it

What is an hourglass?

In olden times, people used a simple device called an hourglass to measure the time. It is made up of two glass bulbs joined together by a narrow opening. The bulb is filled with affixed amount of sand. On turning the sides, the sand will flow from the upper to the lower bulb. Different amounts of sand will take different time to flow down. So, we have hourglass of one minute, five minute or an hour.
