### Use of Probability in Permutation and Combination

One of the most fascinating aspects of probability theory is its competence in predicting the possible outcomes when multiple events occurred. For example, at the beginning of chapter 6 of NCERT solutions for Maths class 11th, it is given that we can make many permutation just using probability. There are many examples to explain the concepts of permutation. For example, what is the possible number of combinations you can make from 3 pairs of pants and 2 shirts?

Following the previous example, there are 3 ways in which a pant can be chosen in 2 ways. For each pant, there are 2 choices of a shirt which gave us the formula of 3 x 2 = 6 pairs of a pant and a shirt. These formulae or the method of multiplication are illustrated in examples with figures. There are only 6 questions in Exercise 6.1 of Class 11 Mathematics. These are quite easy to solve and understand.

Studying the above-given illustration is part of the fundamental principle of counting, also called multiplication principle. The principle states that if an event takes place in m different manners, following which another event took place in n different ways, then the total number of occurrences of the events in the given order is m x n. The benefit of using this principle is that it shortens the process and also generalizes the steps. It can work with more than two events too.
