If two lines intersect at a point in space, the shortest distance between them is zero. Furthermore, if two lines in space are parallel, the shortest distance between them will be the vertical distance, i.e. the vertical length drawn from one point on one line to another. Also, in a space, there are lines that neither intersect nor are parallel. In fact, this pair of lines is not coplanar and is called slanted lines. For example, consider a room of size 1, 3, 2 units with x, y and z axes respectively.

The line that runs diagonally across the sealing and the line runs from one corner of one directly above the opposite point and runs diagonally from the bottom of the wall. These lines are skewed because they are neither parallel nor ever found. By the shortest distance between two lines we mean that one point of one line is with one point on the other line so that the length of the segment thus obtained is the shortest. For the oblique lines, the shortest distance line will be perpendicular to both lines.
