#### Addition and Subtraction of Fractional Numbers

##### Addition of Like Fractions

Examples

Add: (i) 1/7 + 4/7, (ii) 4/15 + 5/15 + 2/15

(i) 1/7 + 4/7 = (1 + 4)/7 = 5/7

(ii) 4/15 + 5/15 + 2/15 = (4 + 5 + 2)/15 = 11/15

##### Addition of Unlike Fractions

To add unlike fractions, we first convert them into like fractions and then add them as usual.

Add: 3/4 + 1/10

The LCM of the denominators 4 and 10 is 20. We convert the fractions into equivalent fractions with denominator 20.

¾ = (3 x 5)/ (4 x 5) = 15/20 and 1/10 = (1 x 2)/ (10 x 2) = 2/20

Now 15/20 + 2/20 = 17/20

Thus, the sum of 3/4 and 1/10 is 17/20

#### Subtraction of Like Fractions

To subtract like fractions, we simply subtract the numerators of the given fractions. The number thus obtained becomes the numerator of the required fraction and the denominator of this fraction is common denominator of the given fractions.

Examples:

Subtract 4/13 from 9/13.

We can write 9/13 – 4/13 = 5/13

#### Subtraction of Unlike Fractions

To subtract unlike fractions, we first convert them into like fractions and then subtract as usual.

Examples:

Subtract 5/11 from 2/3.

We can write 2/3 – 5/11 = 5/13

We convert the given fractions into equivalent fractions with denominator 33.

5/11 = (5 x 3)/ (11 x 3) = 15/33 and 2/3 = (2 x 11)/ (3 x 11) = 22/33

Now, 22/33 – 15/33 = 7/33

Thus, the difference between 2/3 and 5/11 is 7/33.

##### How do you add fractions with unlike denominators?

Here’s the way to do it:

(i) Cross-multiply the two fractions and add the results together to get the numerator of the answer.

(ii) Multiply the two denominators together to get the denominator of the answer.

(iii) Write your answer as a fraction.

##### Simplify: 5/8 + 2/5 + ¾

The LCM of denominators 8, 5 and 4 is 40. We convert the given fractions into equivalent fractions with denominator 40.

5/8 = (5 x 5)/(8 x 5) = 25/40

2/5 = (2 x 8)/ (5 x 8) = 16/40

¾ = (3 x 10)/ (4 x 10) = 30/40

Now, 25/40 + 16/40 + 30/40 = 71/40

Thus, the sum of 5/8, 2/5 and ¾ is 71/40

A mixed number is a number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction.

Step 1: Find the least common denominator. Find the least common denominator (LCD) of the fractions.

Step 2: Find the equivalent fraction.

##### How do we multiply fractions?

The first step when multiplying fractions is to multiply the two numerators. The second step is to multiply the two denominators. Finally, simplify the new fractions. The fractions can also be simplified before multiplying by factoring out common factors in the numerator and denominator.
