Fraction
A fraction is a number which represents / indicates a part or parts of a whole. The whole may be a single object or a group of objects (collection).
Fraction as a Part of a Whole
4/9 indicates 4 parts out of 9 equal parts of a whole.
8/9 indicates 8 parts out of 9 equal parts of a whole.
Thus, 4/9 and 8/9 are fractions.
In 4/9, 4 is called numerator and 9 is denominator.
Similarly, in 8/9 the numerator is 8 and the denominator is 9.
Class 6 Maths Exercise 7.1 Important Questions
Find 2/5 of a collection of: (i) Rs 20 (ii) 25 chocolates.
(i) We can write 2/5 of Rs. 20 = (20 x 2)/5 = 40/5 = Rs. 8
(ii) We can write 2/5 of 25 chocolates = (25 x 2)/5 = 50/5 = 10- chocolates
Therefore, we conclude that the fractional part of a collection is determined by dividing the collection into subgroups equal to the number representing the denominator of the fraction. Then we take the number of subgroups equal to the number representing the numerator of the fraction.
Fractions are used in baking to tell how much of an ingredient to use. Fractions are used in telling time; each minute is a fraction of the hour. Finally, fractions are used to determine discounts when there’s a sale going on.
According to the algorithm that drives this word similarity engine, the top 5 related words for “fractions” are: divide, units of measurement, calculate, halve, and portion.
What are three things about fractions?
A Proper Fraction has a numerator that is smaller than its denominator and represents a quantity less than the whole, or < 1: 1/5, 2/5, 3/5, and 4/5 are proper fractions. An Improper Fraction has a numerator larger than its denominator and represents a quantity greater than the whole, or > 1:
Faction as a Part of a Collection
Let us consider a collection of 12 balls. If we divide the collection into three equal parts, we get 4 balls in each of the three parts.
Thus, one-third of 12 is 4, i.e.,
1/3 of 12 = 12 x 1/3 = 12/3 = 4
Similarly, to obtain ¾ of the collection, we divide the collection
into four equal parts and take 3 such parts. In the given figure, there are 15 buttons in 3 parts out of 4 equal parts of the collection, i.e.,
¾ of 20 = 20 x ¾ = (20 x 3)/4 = 15
