A boarding school is an institution where children live within the premises while being given formal education. Some boarding schools also have day students who attend the institution by day and return off-campus to their families in the evenings. Boarding school pupils are typically referred to as “boarders”.

Some parents want their children to get education in schools which offer challenging courses and at times the local school system does not offer them challenging courses. Some send their kids to boarding because of family tradition. These kids who choose to go away to school prove to their parents that they can be away from home on their own and make good decisions. Some consider boarding schools good to make the children independent and disciplined.

The Gurudwara is a place for meditation and prayer. It is the main place for the Sikh community (the sangat ) to gather together and it is also a place where Sikhs and the wider community can learn about the faith.

Langar is ‘an almshouse’ or ‘a place for the poor and needy’. It is a community kitchen in the Sikh tradition. The concept of Langar is to provide everyone in need of food, irrespective of their caste, class, religion and gender and wealth is always welcome as the Guru’s guest.

Langar ensures the participation of women and children in a task of service for mankind. Langar also teaches the manners or etiquette of sitting and eating in a community situation, which plays a great part in maintenance of the good values and equality of all the human beings, providing everyone a welcomed, secured and protected place of safety.

Divya was asked to wash her hands before she could help in Langar sewa because during the preparation, proper care should be taken for keeping purity, hygiene and cleanliness and while serving the food also the servers must observe strict rules of cleanliness and hygiene. When preparing food, the mouth and nose should be covered properly by a piece of cloth. The servers also should not touch the serving utensils to the plates of those they serve. When serving foods by hand, such as chapattis or fruit, the servers’ hands should not touch the hand or plate of those they are serving.

The material for langar in the Gurudwara ia arranged by anyone who wants to contribute for it and whatever way or amount the person wants to contribute. So, everyone contributes in some way or the other. Some arrange for the material, some give money, and others help in the work like some serve the food and some water, while some clean the Gurudwara and some wash the utensils.

People pick up their own plates after eating the langar as it is a gesture to show your manners and etiquettes. Moreover at times there is too much sangat and people are waiting for space to eat langar or are in a line and they sit when the other people eating the langar have finished so it is good to pick your plate or the plates of the old people sitting around you, along with your plate so that other people can sit and eat.
