Chuskit was ten years old and still had never gone to a school. But that day she was going to school for the first time. She had been waiting for this day since long.

The children had to everyday take the big road and then walk along the lake. Cross the river near the poplar trees, and then after a small climb to reach the school.

Differently -abled children are those children who have inability to perform any one of the task which other normal children can perform easily. They are some people who cannot see, hear, speak or walk like everyone else and are called Differently abled people.

People who cannot walk, take the help of various walking aids like walking stick, wheel chair and crutches. A wheel chair is a chair with wheels. Wheel chairs are used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury or disability. The wheels of the chair can either be operated by the person occupying the chair or by the electric motors. There are often handles behind the seat to allow it to be pushed by another person.

Chuskit was happier when her father (Aaba-le) got a chair which had wheels. She quickly learnt how to sit in the chair and how to move it – back and forth. Chuskit was so happy now as she did not need her father to carry her everywhere. When she wanted to go out she would tell her mother to put her in the wheel chair. Now, she could come outside on her own. Chuskit would now sit on it and see the other children laughing and playing on their way to school every morning.

When Abdul went back from Chuskit’s house; he had started thinking of how to get Chuskit to school. He explained about Chuskit to the Headmaster and talked to the teachers till they agreed with his thoughts. Now everyone got together to work so that Chuskit’s problem could be solved. They made a plan so that Chuskit could bring her wheel-chair by road to school.

For bringing Chuskit to school, all worked together and made a plan. The uneven road had to be levelled. So, one group of children started levelling the road. Another group worked to make the area near the river even. But there was still a problem of Chuskit crossing the river. The older children took teacher’s help to make a small bridge with flat pieces of wood across the river. Everyone happily worked hard as they all wanted Chuskit to come to the school.

Chuskit’s grandfather had tears in his eyes because he was very happy for her as she would now be able to go to the school like other children and study. He also wanted her to go to school but due to her disability could not send her.

Some children with disabilities face difficulties due to lack of convenience, both in terms of physically unapproachable school buildings and inappropriate learning materials. discrimination and unfairness which prevents children with disabilities from getting education like normal children.

A ramp is an inclined plane that is carefully designed to help wheelchair and scooter users to move around and enter a building or vehicle with ease. Ramps allow wheelchairs, strollers, carts, and other wheeled objects to easily way in steps, vehicles and other raised areas or platforms.

Ramps provide an alternative to stairs for wheelchair users, people with mobility issues and people with prams, bicycles and other wheeled items. In case there is a child coming to school on wheel chair, he/she can easily enter through the ramp with someone’s help or on his/ her own.

If a child is unable to go to school due to any of the reason like poverty, disability etc then that child is left behind for their whole life in comparison to the other children. He remains poor and is unable to even afford basic needs of life. People who lack education have trouble getting ahead in life, have worse health and are poorer than the well-educated.

Chuskit lives in Skitpopul village of Ladakh which is a mountain desert. It is a high altitude desert.

This day is celebrated on 3rd December every year to promote an understanding of disability issues and gather together support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

Paralympics are a series of international contests for athletes with disabilities that are associated with and held following the summer and winter Olympic Games. It is the largest international event for disabled athletes which aims at societal change and take place shortly after every Olympic Games in the same host city. The Paralympic Games are held every two years

Blind and visually impaired people use other senses like sound, touch and smell to get used to their surroundings. They use a stick to find their way, move around or to cross the road etc. They have with low vision or no vision and may use their other senses to get around.
