#### Quadrilaterals

A quadrilateral in mathematical terms as a four sided simple closed figure lying in a plane.

Quadrilaterals are geometrical figures that are commonly found in our surroundings. If you look around, you will find a quadrilateral in one form or the other such as, square, rectangle, parallelogram, trapezium, rhombus etc.

The two line segments joining opposite vertices of quadrilateral are called its diagonals.

##### Definition of a Quadrilateral

Let A, B, C, D be four points in a plane such that no three of them are collinear and the line segments AB, BC, CD and DA do not intersect except at their end points. Then, the figure made of these four line segments is called the quadrilateral ABCD.

##### Terms Related to a Quadrilateral

(i) In the quadrilateral ABCD, the four points A, B, C and D are called its vertices.

(ii) In the quadrilateral ABCD, the four line segments AB, BC, CD and DA are called its sides.

(iii) ∠DAB, ∠ABC, ∠BCD and ∠CDA are called its angles to be denoted by ∠A, ∠B, ∠C and ∠D respectively.

(iv) The two line segments AC and BD joining opposite vertices are called its diagonals.

(v) Two sides of a quadrilateral which have a common end point are called its adjacent sides. In Fig., BC, CD; CD, DA; DA, AB and AB, BC are the four pairs of adjacent sides of the quadrilateral ABCD.

(vi) Two sides of a quadrilateral are called its opposite sides, if they do not have a common end point. In Fig., AB, DC and BC, AD are two pairs of the opposite sides of the quadrilateral ABCD.

(vii) Two angles of a quadrilateral having a common side are called its adjacent angles. In Fig., ∠A, ∠B; ∠B, ∠C; ∠C, ∠D and ∠D, ∠A are the four pairs of adjacent angles of the quadrilateral ABCD.

(viii) Two angles of a quadrilateral which are not adjacent angles are known as the opposite angles of the quadrilateral.
