#### Addition of Decimals

To add decimals, we take the following steps:

Step-1: Convert the given decimals into like decimals.

Step-2: Write the numbers in column form.

Step-3: Decimal points should be aligned so that tenths come under tenths, hundredths come under hundredths and so on.

Example:

Add: 28.7, 29, 158.09 and 825.7

First of all, we convert the given decimals into like decimals.

So, the decimals will be 28.70, 29.00, 158.09 and 825.70.

Now, put them in columns and add:

+ 8 2 5.7 0

= 1 0 4 1.4 9

Hence, the sum of the given decimals is 1041.49.

##### Ramesh travelled 15 km 28 m by car, 9 km 814 m by bus and the rest 2 km 25 m by bicycle. How much distance did he travel in all?

We have, Distance travelled by car = 15 km 28 m = 15.028 km

Distance travelled by bus = 9 km 814 m = 9.814 km

Distance travelled by bicycle = 2 km 25 m = 2.025 km

So, Total distance travelled is:

15.028 km

+ 9.814 km

+ 2.025 km

26.867 km

Hence, total distance travelled = 26.867 km

= 26 km 867 m.

##### Rekha had a one hundred rupee note. She bought her school bag for Rs. 75.25. How much amount did she get back?

Total amount of money = Rs. 100 = Rs. 100.00

Amount spent on school bag = Rs. 75.25

Balance amount of money = Rs. 100.00 – Rs. 75.25

– 75.25

24.75

= Rs. 24.75

#### Subtraction of Decimals

To subtract decimals, we take the following steps:

Step-1: Convert the given decimals into like decimals.

Step-2: Write the smaller number under the larger one in column form in such a way that the decimal points of both the numbers are in the same column and the digits of the same place lie in the same column.

Step-3: Subtract as we do in the case of whole numbers.

Step-4: In the difference, put the decimal point directly under the decimal points of the given numbers.

Example:

Subtract 5.946 from 23.93.

Converting the given decimals into like decimals, we have 5.946, 23.930

Now,

23.930

– 5.946

17.984

Hence, difference is 17.984.

##### What is addition and subtraction of decimals?

To add two decimal numbers, first check if they have the same number of digits to the right of the decimal point. If they don’t, add zeros to the right of one of the numbers until they do. Then, write one number on top of the other, lining up the decimal points vertically.
